3 Days in Glacier National Park With Kids: A Real Schedule

Three days in Glacier National Park with kids works best as one day per area, not one long loop repeated three times. Split it into a Going-to-the-Sun Road day, a Many Glacier day, and a slower day near Apgar or Two Medicine, and nobody spends six hours a day buckled into a car seat on switchbacks.

Day 1 — Going-to-the-Sun Road. Start early at Apgar or Lake McDonald Lodge, before the pullouts fill. Drive the road in short hops: the lake, the Weeping Wall, Logan Pass. At the pass, walk the first flat stretch of the boardwalk toward Hidden Lake Overlook and turn back whenever legs or patience run out. Head down the same way for a late lunch near the lake.

Day 2 — Many Glacier. Drive out in the morning, when the light and the wildlife activity are both better. Walk part of the Swiftcurrent Lake Nature Trail — flat, shaded in places, and it circles a lake kids can actually see across. A short boat ride on Swiftcurrent or Josephine Lake turns a flat walk into an outing without adding real mileage.

Day 3 — Apgar or Two Medicine. Keep this one short. Apgar Village has a beach, easy paths, and bike rentals; Two Medicine has a quieter lake and shorter trails than Many Glacier. Leave the afternoon open — by day three, kids need a slow morning more than a fourth big activity.

Every one of these days is a fill-in template in the free National Park Family Trip Planner, so you can drop in your own drive times and nap windows instead of guessing.

Why one day per area beats a loop

Glacier is big, and the distances between areas are longer than they look on a map — Many Glacier alone is over an hour from Apgar on winding roads. Trying to see two areas in one day usually means two hours of driving eats the time you meant to spend at a trailhead. One area a day means less time in the car and more time where the kids actually want to be.

Going-to-the-Sun Road with a car full of kids

The road is part of the trip and part of the challenge — it's narrow, has real drop-offs in places, and doesn't fully open for the season until the snowpack clears, which shifts year to year. Check the current opening dates and any vehicle reservation requirements on the National Park Service site before you go, since that changes which days you can drive it end to end.

Motion sickness is common on the switchbacks. Keep breakfast light, put the queasiest kid in the middle seat if you can, and plan to stop at the first sign of trouble rather than pushing to the next pullout.

Altitude, weather and water

Logan Pass sits well above the valley floor, and the air is noticeably thinner and cooler even in summer. Bring a real layer for every kid, not just a light jacket — it can be warm and calm at the lake and windy and cold at the pass on the same afternoon. Weather at elevation changes fast, so check the forecast for the pass specifically, not just the town you're staying in.

Glacier's water looks clean and isn't safe to drink untreated. Carry more than you think you need, refill where the park has stations, and treat lake or stream water if you're relying on it for a longer walk.

What to skip with young kids

Full hikes to Grinnell Glacier or Iceberg Lake are real trail miles with serious elevation gain, built for adults and older, capable kids — not a family day with a 5-year-old. The short walk at Swiftcurrent gives a similar view of the mountains and the water with a fraction of the distance.

Where three days falls apart

Trying to do Going-to-the-Sun Road and Many Glacier on the same day. Skipping the slow third day because it feels unproductive — that's usually the day that keeps everyone's mood intact for the drive home. If a full day of driving the road with kids in the back sounds like more stress than sightseeing, a guided Glacier shuttle tour hands the driving to someone else and lets both adults actually look at the scenery.
