How to use the national park checklist

Keep one clean copy as your master list. On a second copy, mark parks you have visited and write a year beside each box. Circle three realistic choices for the next trip, then compare travel time, season, trail length, and reservation rules before choosing one.

Why some parks have more than one state

Four parks cross state lines on the official NPS list: Death Valley, Gateway Arch, Great Smoky Mountains, and Yellowstone. This checklist puts each one under a combined heading instead of repeating it under every state. That keeps the total at 63 unique parks.

Why the National Park System has more than 63 sites

National Park is one designation within the National Park System. The NPS also manages national monuments, historic sites, battlefields, seashores, recreation areas, and other units. Those places are real NPS sites, but they are outside this 63-park checklist.

When to print a fresh copy

Congress can create a new national park or change a site's designation. Check the official NPS list before a long trip or reprint this page if the total changes. This version was checked against the NPS list on September 11, 2026.
